If you have facial swelling, this could indicate an infection. You will need to see a dentist as you may need antibiotics to relieve the symptoms. If you need to be seen urgently outside of our practice hours, you can find the details of the nearest emergency dentist by contacting the NHS 111 service.
Generally discomfort after an extraction does not last for long and can easily be controlled by the painkillers you would normally take for a headache. If it lasts any longer than 24 hours you should go back to your dental team for advice. Sometimes pain may occur 3-4 days after the extraction when a blood clot has not formed properly in the extraction socket and the bone becomes infected. You will need to go back to your dentist, who will dress the socket for you.
Dry mouth can be a symptom of many different problems and can happen as you get older. Quite often it is a side effect of medication – especially heart, blood pressure and depression tablets. If you are taking any regular medication from your doctor, Many prescription medicines can cause a dry mouth. If you think that you are suffering with a dry mouth, you should discuss this with your dentist. They may recommend products that are available over-the-counter to help to alleviate this problem.
If the tooth is clean and if you can, try to put the tooth back in. Hold the tooth by the crown and place it firmly back into the socket. Bite on a clean handkerchief for 15-20 minutes. If you cannot get the tooth back in, it has more chance of survival if you can keep the tooth in your cheek until you can get to an emergency dentist. If this is not possible, keep the tooth in some milk. The tooth needs to be replaced ideally within 30 minutes, so seek dental attention promptly.
Gums bleed when they are irritated and inflamed which is not considered normal. This is due to plaque being left on the teeth which causes inflammation called gingivitis and if not addressed can develop into gum disease. A good oral care regime should be able to prevent your gums from bleeding if done correctly. We would always suggest that you have regular examinations at your dentist. This can help diagnose and treat anything unusual.
Any toothpaste containing fluoride that you like the flavour of is fine. Fluoride is important because it helps to strengthen tooth enamel, inhibiting tooth decay.
It′s up to you whether you choose to use a mouth rinse or not. However it is important to remember that it should not be used instead of a toothbrush, as it won′t clean your teeth for you.
The decision to see your dentist when you have a cold is a personal one. If you’re feeling up to it and don’t have a fever or other flu-like symptoms, it’s okay to keep your appointment. However, if you’re not feeling well, it’s best to reschedule to protect both yourself and others.
We get that it is not always possible to plan ahead and reschedule your dental visit due to illness. However, remember it is always best to be cautious and reschedule your visit for when you are feeling better.
Only floss the teeth you want to keep! It doesn’t matter how well you brush your teeth you will not get rid of the plaque in between your teeth without using something designed to clean in between. If you don’t clean in between, your gums will bleed, your breath may smell, you will develop gum disease and you will eventually start to lose the bone that supports the teeth. It won’t happen overnight and some people are much more susceptible to the problem than others. If you can get into good habits and routines using floss or tepe brushes every day, you will be well on your way to keeping your teeth and gums healthy for life.
