Tooth decay is the destruction of your tooth enamel, which is the hard, outer protective layer of your teeth.

Tooth decay often stems from plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that continually forms on your teeth. Consuming sugary foods or drinks triggers the bacteria in plaque to produce acids, which attack tooth enamel and lead to the formation of cavities.

So, how can we prevent this?

Here are some top tips:

• Brush your teeth at least twice daily, and more if possible. Pay special attention to all tooth surfaces, particularly the back teeth that are often overlooked and can develop future issues.
• Clean between your teeth at least once a day. Neglecting this step can mean missing out on cleaning up to 25% or more of your tooth surface, putting these areas at risk of cavity formation. Don’t want a filling? Start flossing regularly.
• After brushing, avoid rinsing. Instead, spit out the excess toothpaste, wipe your lips, and leave the residue. This allows the toothpaste’s protective benefits to continue working. It’s advisable to start spitting instead of rinsing as early as 3 years old.
• Opt for an Automatic Toothbrush. Studies show that electric toothbrush users have fewer cavities, better tooth health, and fewer overall issues. Look for a model with a small rotary head and a built-in pressure sensor to prevent damage to your teeth and gums from excessive force.
• Be mindful of brushing pressure. Many of us apply too much force, which can cause gums to recede and expose the vulnerable root surface. This can lead to sensitivity and cavity formation. Consider a toothbrush with a pressure sensor to guide your brushing technique.
• Regularly visit your dentist and hygienist. Routine appointments with these professionals can help address dental concerns and maintain your oral health. The recommended time between visits will be determined based on your individual needs and discussions during your appointments.
